EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS—A Brief CHRONOLOGY

1875—Edgar Rice Burroughs is born in Chicago on Sept. I, the son of a Civil War Major.

1891—He enlists in the 7th U.S. Cavalry in Arizona, but is soon discharged as underage.

1900—He marries Emma Centennia Hulbert in January, and tries to settle down on a job in Chicago.

1906—After several failures in a variety of jobs, he secures a position at Sears, Roebuck & Co.

1909—Losing his own business he is forced to pawn Mrs. Burroughs’ jewelry to buy food.

1911—Determines to try writing fiction, and sells a fantasy story of Mars to pulp magazine.

1912—Writes "Tarzan of the Apes" and sells it to the Alt-Story magazine for about $700.

1914—McClurg publishes "Tarzan of the Apes" n book form and sells over one million copies.

1917—"Tarzan of the Apes" is published in England, and McClurg publishes the first Mars book.

1918—The first Tarzan movie is released staring Elmo Lincoln as Tarzan of the Apes.

1919—Millionaire Burroughs settles on a large estate in California naming it Tarzana.

1920—Tarzan has been translated into seventeen foreign languages and is a best seller abroad.

1923—Forty-eight years old in September, world renowned Burroughs incorporates himself.

1926—The only year from, 1912 through 1944 that did not witness a new story by Burroughs.

1929—"Tarzan of the Apes" is condensed and featured as an illustrated daily newspaper strip.

1931—Edgar Rice Burroughs begins publishing his own books, and a Sunday Tarzan strip is initiated.

1932—A new talking Tarzan movie with Olympic star Johnny Weismuller is a smashing success.

1935—Burroughs-Tarzan Enterprises produces and releases a Tarzan movie filmed in Guatemala.

1937—John Coleman, Burroughs’ younger son, begins illustrating his father’s new books.

1939—The first detailed article on the Burroughs/Tarzan fame is featured by the Sat. Eve. Post.

1941—Burroughs witnesses the bombing of Pearl Harbor and becomes a war correspondent.

1947—The publication of the first fanzine devoted entirely to ERB, the Burroughs Bulletin

1950—The Master of Adventure passes away on March 19 in Tarzana at seventy-four years.

1960—The organization on Sept. 5 of The Burroughs Bibliophiles, a club of serious ERB fans.

1962—The first publication of a complete, authoritative bibliography of Burroughs’ fiction.

       —John Harwood. The literature of Burroughsiana.

1963-Failure to renew ERB copyrights throw major works into public domain, resulting in many reprints, both authorized and unauthorized, accompanied by articles in leading mass-media magazines and newspapers on ERR life and works.

1963-The first booktrade publication of special issue on Burroughs (Nov 28 AB).

1964—The golden anniversary of the publication in book form of "Tarzan of the Apes" in 1914.
